Taler Wallet review
Open-source digital cash wallet with private payments, QR/NFC checkout and bank transfers.

Taler Wallet is an open-source digital wallet for GNU Taler payments, operated by Taler Operations AG in Switzerland. It is aimed at privacy-focused individuals who want digital cash with control over transaction history. Android and iOS apps support QR-code merchant payments, NFC contactless payments, and peer-to-peer sending or requesting. Chrome, Chromium and Firefox extensions extend access to browser users. Multi-currency digital-coin storage, wallet backup and restore, and transaction-history management round out its core wallet functions.
The wallet is free, and Taler Operations states that user fees are zero through the end of 2027, with anticipated fees beginning in 2028. Funding starts through a bank-account deposit, while withdrawals return wallet funds to a bank account. Swiss use currently requires a CH-IBAN bank account and a +41 mobile number, which shapes the onboarding path for users in that market. Once funded, users can pay participating merchants, transfer money to other Taler wallets, and manage or delete transaction history.
Its strongest distinction is privacy-preserving blind-signature payments delivered through an open-source wallet. QR and NFC options cover in-store checkout, while peer-to-peer transfers support direct payments between wallets. The ecosystem remains focused: merchant acceptance depends on participating GNU Taler sellers, and the wallet does not provide bill pay or broad integrations. Choose Taler Wallet if private, open-source digital cash and direct bank transfers matter most. Consider another mobile payment app if you need extensive service integrations, bill payment, or wider merchant coverage.
