Our verdict on Takahē

Takahē is an open-source ActivityPub server for operating a federated microblogging community. It is aimed at small- to medium-size installations, particularly communities that want multiple domains on one infrastructure and multiple public identities per user. Members can publish posts, follow timelines, and interact through replies, threads, boosts, and likes. Its browser-based interface can be installed as a PWA, and Mastodon-compatible client applications are supported.

The feature set covers several parts of day-to-day community activity. Posts can include content warnings, image captions, and visibility choices, including local-only posts; users can edit posts and view attached media. Timelines include home, local, federated, user, and hashtag views, while notifications surface activity. Moderation tools cover identities and servers, including blocking and defederation. This combination makes Takahē more than a narrow publishing endpoint, but its scope is centered on federated microblogging rather than a general community platform.

Deployment is an important trade-off: operators install and maintain the server themselves. The documentation describes container-based installation and calls for an external database and media storage, so teams should be prepared to manage those dependencies. The project describes itself as beta and notes that some features remain in development. Its web UI is installable as a PWA, but the published materials identify no official iOS or Android apps. Choose Takahē if you want a self-hosted, multi-domain ActivityPub community with compatible clients and moderation controls; look elsewhere if you need a managed service, native mobile apps, or software presented as beyond beta.
