Symantec VIP is a cloud-based multifactor authentication service from Broadcom for enterprises securing access to networks, applications, and data. It supports employee, partner, and consumer-facing authentication, with options that include one-time passwords, push notifications, out-of-band verification, FIDO2, biometrics, and passwordless access. Its risk-based approach also considers user and device behavior, making it suited to organizations that need more than a single second factor.
Integration breadth is a central strength. Symantec VIP supports SAML and RADIUS, VPNs, web applications, cloud applications, user directories, and custom applications. The VIP Web Services API covers authentication, push, SMS, voice, and risk assessment, while SDK/CDK support enables authentication to be embedded in applications. This gives security and identity teams several paths for fitting authentication into existing access environments rather than limiting them to a single application type.
The service also goes beyond authentication prompts with device profiling, device hygiene controls, device ID, and adaptive access capabilities. Self-service credential provisioning and onboarding can help organizations manage enrollment, while support for hardware tokens, cards, keys, mobile OTP, email OTP, SMS OTP, and voice OTP accommodates different user and policy requirements. Symantec VIP is a strong fit for enterprises that need flexible factors, passwordless options, and risk-aware controls across varied systems. Organizations seeking only a simple authenticator app or basic OTP flow may find its broader integration and policy scope unnecessary.
