Our verdict on SWAYAM Plus
SWAYAM Plus is a government-backed online course marketplace for students, working professionals and lifelong learners in India. Implemented by IIT Madras, it brings together industry and education partners across professional development, technical, healthcare, finance and AI-related learning. Learners can enroll in free or paid courses, with certificates and NCrF-aligned academic credits available for eligible completions. The platform supports online and partner-delivered learning, and its catalog includes content in 12 Indian languages.
The freemium model gives learners access to free enrollment alongside paid courses. A published paid course price starts at ₹500 as a one-time payment, while course-level pricing and availability depend on the offering. There is no recurring subscription structure in the published offering. This approach suits learners who want to choose individual industry-aligned courses rather than commit to a broad subscription, especially when a certificate or academic credit option matters.
SWAYAM Plus stands out for its India-focused ecosystem: courses come from industry and education partners, institutions and higher-education organizations are part of the model, and AI-enabled personalized course matching helps connect learners with relevant options. It is accessible through the web and is not an open-source product. Choose it for Indian-language, employability-focused learning with potential academic-credit pathways; consider another marketplace if you need a broader international catalog, native mobile access or a single subscription covering a large course library.
