Our verdict on Sulu

Sulu is an open-source content management system for PHP and Symfony developers building complex websites, web applications, and content-driven platforms. It supports multisite webspace management, multilingual content, structured page templates, reusable content blocks, media assets, editorial workflows, previews, permissions, SEO, and API-based delivery. Organizations can operate it as a self-hosted application, while Sulu.cloud provides a hosted deployment option. Its strongest fit is agencies and organizations coordinating multiple locales, sites, teams, and content types from one CMS.

Editorial control is a central strength. Sulu supports revision, approval, publishing, and archiving across the content lifecycle, with role-based permissions that can include locale and object-level access controls. Configurable fields, page templates, reusable blocks, and a media library for images, documents, video, and audio give teams a structured way to manage varied content. SEO capabilities include metadata, canonical links, speaking URLs, and XML sitemaps. These features make Sulu a strong choice when governance and content reuse matter as much as page creation.

Sulu also fits organizations that need more than a traditional website presentation layer. Headless delivery and API integrations support content distribution into web applications and other channels, while HubSpot and Salesforce are named integrations. The trade-off is operational and technical: self-hosted deployments place responsibility for installation, infrastructure, and ongoing operation on the organization, and the platform is aimed at PHP and Symfony developers rather than purely nontechnical site teams. Choose Sulu for multilingual, multisite programs with structured workflows and permissions; choose a simpler CMS when one site, a smaller content model, or minimal technical ownership is the priority.
