Our verdict on StoryBored
StoryBored is an open-source storyboarding app for filmmakers who want to organize scenes and shots alongside locally run AI image and video workflows. It runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux, and is aimed at solo users and small teams comfortable managing a self-hosted setup. Boards support drag-to-reorder shot organization, with an optional AI-assisted breakdown from pasted script text.
Its workflow extends beyond static boards: each shot can have multiple still-image takes in a comparison gallery, and approved shots can be rendered into short video clips. Those clips can be assembled in board order into a timed MP4 animatic. Character LoRAs can be trained from photos or imported, while projects can be moved through portable .storybored files. ComfyUI is central to generation: image and video rendering require a reachable ComfyUI instance. The app also supports importing and exporting ComfyUI API-format workflows, and lists OpenAI-compatible LLMs and Ollama for AI features. This makes it a fit for users who want control over their workflow and can manage its dependencies, rather than a turnkey browser-based tool.
StoryBored’s local, open-source approach suits technical filmmakers who value script breakdown, shot comparisons, character models, and animatic export in one workflow.
