Our verdict on StoryBoard Quick

StoryBoard Quick is desktop software for creating digital storyboards without requiring drawing skills. It is aimed at academic users working on film, television, advertising, games, and other visual projects. The workflow centers on assembling characters, props, backgrounds, imported photos, and custom artwork into shots. Users can add dialogue, audio, and camera-movement notes, use captions and in-frame text, import script text from screenwriting or text files, and organize frames in an overview. Printing supports physical storyboard layouts for planning or presentation.

Its strongest fit is structured pre-production. Shot annotations, scene layouts, script import, and visual asset placement give directors, educators, students, and production teams a defined way to turn written ideas into visual sequences. Support for Final Cut Pro and Adobe Premiere Pro also connects the storyboard process with two established video-editing applications. The academic edition is the relevant plan, and StoryBoard Quick is a paid product without a free plan, making its licensing model more suited to committed academic use than casual experimentation.

The main tradeoff is scope. StoryBoard Quick runs on Windows only, and the academic focus narrows its audience. It also does not provide collaboration features, which makes it less suitable for distributed teams that need shared review or browser-based access. Export is limited to Flash and HTML5, so users seeking a wider range of current delivery formats may need another tool or an additional workflow. Choose StoryBoard Quick when desktop shot planning, script import, printing, and academic access matter most; choose an alternative when cross-platform work, collaboration, or broader export support is central.
