Stockpyl review
A powerful Python toolkit for complex inventory models, not a packaged replenishment application.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Stockpyl is an open-source Python package for inventory optimization and supply-chain simulation. It is aimed at researchers, analysts, and developers who need to model inventory systems directly in code. The scope covers classical single-node methods, including economic order quantity, newsvendor, and Wagner-Whitin models, alongside safety-stock and base-stock calculations. For teams building custom analytical tools rather than selecting a hosted application, its Python distribution and self-hosted platform fit a technical workflow.
Its strongest area is model depth. Stockpyl supports serial multi-echelon optimization under the stochastic-service model, serial and tree networks under the guaranteed-service model, and arbitrary-topology networks using enumeration or coordinate descent. It also supports single- and multi-echelon simulation, multiple products, bill-of-materials structures, stochastic demand, and supply disruptions. Built-in or custom inventory policies and cost functions give developers room to represent specialized operating assumptions instead of limiting analysis to a fixed replenishment template.
The trade-off is that this flexibility comes with implementation responsibility. Stockpyl is a Python package, not a hosted commercial application, so it suits teams prepared to manage code and deployment. It is less suitable for buyers looking for packaged replenishment workflows, verified integrations, or service-level features designed for operational users. Choose Stockpyl when the priority is technical control over complex inventory-network models and simulations. Choose an alternative when the priority is a ready-to-run application with broader business-system connectivity and guided replenishment operations.
Stockpyl pros and cons

- Covers EOQ, newsvendor, Wagner-Whitin, and safety-stock models
- Supports serial, tree, and arbitrary-topology multi-echelon networks
- Adds simulation for products, BOMs, disruptions, policies, and cost functions
- Where it doesn't
- Requires Python development and self-hosted deployment
- Does not provide a packaged replenishment workflow
- Integration and service-level capabilities are limited
