squaremap review
An open-source browser map with live updates, player data, markers, and API access.

squaremap is an open-source Minecraft server plugin and mod that generates a live world map for viewing in a web browser. It is intended for server administrators running Paper, Fabric, NeoForge, or Sponge who want an accessible map of their worlds. The vanilla-style top-down 2D view can display player positions and details, world markers, spawn points, and world borders. Multiple dimensions are supported, making it suitable for servers that need map coverage beyond a single world.
The main strength is the combination of live map delivery and server-aware information. Automatic background rendering and triggered map updates help keep displayed worlds current, while player markers show yaw rotation, health, and armor information. Administrators can configure rendering per world and adjust web-server settings for their environment. The browser-based presentation keeps the map accessible without requiring a separate desktop application, while the self-hosted model leaves deployment within the server administrator’s environment.
squaremap is distributed as open-source server software under the MIT license, with a free plan and no paid tiers described. Its API extends the core map with markers, shapes, and icons, and plugin and mod support connects it to the supported Minecraft server platforms. The trade-off is a focused feature set: maps are limited to a 2D top-down view, and installation, rendering configuration, and web-server settings remain part of the administrator’s work. Choose squaremap if you want a free, extensible live map for a compatible server; choose an alternative if you need a different viewing mode, managed hosting, or AI features.
