Splitwise review
A strong expense-splitting app with settlement options, but not a full payment-transfer service.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
Splitwise helps friends, families, roommates, and travel groups record shared expenses, divide bills, track informal debts, and settle balances. It supports equal, unequal, percentage, and share-based splits, while debt simplification can show how group members can reduce the number of repayments. The service is available through the web, iPhone, Android, and API, making it suitable for groups that want a shared record before paying one another.
Its strongest area is expense-management depth. Users can add recurring expenses, scan and itemize receipts, convert currencies, search expenses, and review charts and spending analysis. These features give frequent travelers, households, and ongoing groups more structure than a simple payment-request app. Splitwise also connects with Splitwise Pay, Pay by Bank, Venmo, and PayPal for payment or settlement workflows.
The product remains narrower than a general-purpose payment app. Splitwise Pay is available only to eligible U.S. residents and access is subject to approval, while international transfers are not supported. The published plans include a free option and paid structures named Individual + Trip Pass, Duo + Trip Pass, and Monthly subscription; paid features include Splitwise Pro capabilities, with Duo usable by two people and Trip Pass included where specified. Choose Splitwise if the main problem is organizing shared costs and simplifying who owes whom. Choose another service if direct transfers, international payments, or broader cash-out access are the primary requirement.
