Our verdict on SPIRE Up
SPIRE Up is a blended print-and-digital literacy intervention for striving readers in grades K–8+, including students with dyslexia. Its teacher-led Structured Literacy approach follows an Orton-Gillingham-based framework and covers phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, comprehension, spelling, and encoding. The program is organized around 192 lessons covering 64 concepts, with 30–45-minute sessions delivered three to five times weekly in one-to-one or small-group settings. It is best suited to schools and educators running a structured intervention program rather than learners seeking an independent practice app.
The instructional scope is a central strength. SPIRE Up combines guided lessons with online independent skills practice, digital lesson resources, workbooks, letter cards, and word cards. An adaptive digital placement assessment supports initial grouping or starting-point decisions, while formative and oral reading fluency assessments provide ongoing checks. Teachers also receive class, skill, lesson, and student performance data through the dashboard. This makes the product relevant when instruction, practice, and progress monitoring need to sit within one literacy program. The tradeoff is that its value depends on consistent teacher-led delivery and scheduled intervention time.
For institutional use, SPIRE Up connects with EPS Connect for class management and course assignment, and supports ClassLink, Clever, and District Single Sign-On. The web and iOS coverage supports access across those environments, while EPS Connect provides the program’s data and management layer. Schools should choose SPIRE Up when they want a coordinated literacy intervention with teacher guidance, structured sequencing, print resources, and reporting. It is a less natural fit for families or learners looking primarily for a flexible, self-paced experience without scheduled small-group or one-to-one instruction.
