Our verdict on Spello

Spello is a browser-based spelling and typing practice platform for UK primary-school children in Years 1–6. It combines adaptive spaced repetition with DfE statutory common exception word lists, audio prompts and five practice formats: listen and type, multiple choice, flash card, letter arrange and letter guess. Parents receive progress dashboards, while schools get tools for managing classes, teachers and pupil progress. It is designed for families supporting regular practice and schools coordinating spelling work across classes.

The Families plan costs £20 per year and supports up to four children, with unlimited practice, adaptive word selection, spelling-pattern flags and progress dashboards. A seven-day family trial is available without payment. The Schools plan costs £200 per school per year and adds unlimited children and teachers, a central management dashboard, teacher-set weekly, topic and spelling-pattern lists, whole-school analytics and CSV pupil import. The paid structure is straightforward, although families do not have a free plan for continued access.
