Spacedeck Open review
An open-source whiteboard for teams that want self-hosted, multimedia planning.

Spacedeck Open is an open-source, web-based collaborative whiteboard for educational organizations, creative teams, and groups doing visual planning or brainstorming. It combines a virtually unlimited canvas with rich-media placement, text formatting, drawing, annotation, and graphical shapes. Its self-hosted orientation suits organizations that want to run a board locally or on their own infrastructure rather than rely on a vendor-hosted workspace.
The canvas is the defining strength: participants can drag in images, video, and audio, then arrange them with formatted text, highlights, annotations, and shapes. Real-time collaboration and chat support shared work, while web and email sharing provide ways to distribute boards. Zooming presentation mode shifts the same canvas into a guided walkthrough, and PDF and ZIP export offer ways to take work out of the application. This breadth makes it more suited to open-ended visual boards than a narrowly focused diagramming tool.
Deployment is also the key trade-off. Spacedeck Open is intended to run locally or be self-hosted, with Node.js and optional Docker support; it is not the former hosted spacedeck.com service, which shut down in 2018. WordPress is the listed integration, so teams looking for a broad connected ecosystem may find the fit limited. Choose it when control over deployment and multimedia canvases matter more than a hosted service or extensive integrations. Teams that want a ready-made hosted workspace or workshop templates should consider another whiteboard tool.
