Our verdict on Source-to-Image

Source-to-Image (S2I) is an open-source command-line toolkit for creating runnable container images from application source code. It is aimed at developers and teams working with Docker or OpenShift-oriented builder images who want to inject source code, run an assemble script, and commit the resulting image without writing a Dockerfile. S2I accepts Git repository URLs and local source directories, and it runs on Windows, macOS, and Linux.

Its main strength is the builder-image workflow. Builder images can define assemble, run, save-artifacts, and usage scripts, while incremental builds reuse saved build artifacts. Source files can be filtered through .s2iignore rules, and source-defined environment variables can be passed into the build. S2I also generates Dockerfiles from builder images and supports multi-stage workflows that separate compilation from runtime images. These capabilities make it a focused option for repeatable application-to-container workflows.

S2I fits a container build pipeline rather than a sampler software workflow. Its documented ecosystem centers on Docker, Git, and OpenShift, with support for secret mounts and a local-daemon build method. The project is actively maintained and has recent releases, but its scope remains narrow: it is designed to turn source code into runnable images, not to provide sampler creation or sample-management features. Choose Source-to-Image when the requirement is source-driven container image construction; choose a sampler-focused product when sampling functionality is the primary need.
