Our verdict on SongEngine
SongEngine is a free VST2, VST3, and AU plugin for producers working in compatible DAWs on Windows and macOS. Its core workflow centers on chord progression creation, with Chord Pads, MIDI chord progression import, progression-generation algorithms, chord name detection, audio previews, and editable inversions and voicings. It also generates basslines, arpeggios, phrases, and melodies, making it suited to MIDI-focused songwriters and producers who want several arrangement ideas from chord material.
The free Core offering includes a chord progression builder, more than 60 free presets, Live Mode, MIDI export, and MIDI recording. Live Mode transforms incoming MIDI chords into new phrases in real time, while generated MIDI can be routed to another synth or exported as standard MIDI files. The paid extensions are one-time purchases: Genre Extension Starter is $22, Genre Extension Core is $34, Genre Extension Complete is $57, Modern Strings is $29, ChordConverter Standard is $57, ChordConverter Plus is $99, and MassExporter is $57. ChordConverter Plus includes MassExporter, while MassExporter supports bulk MIDI phrase export.
SongEngine fits producers who want progression generation and MIDI transformation inside an existing DAW, especially when editable voicings and additional phrase-generation tools matter.
