SoLoud is a free, portable C/C++ audio engine for game runtime playback and mixing. It is aimed at solo developers and small to mid-market teams that need open-source audio infrastructure without a paid licensing tier. The engine handles multiple simultaneous and virtual voices, volume, pan, playback speed, filters, mixing buses, queued sounds, looping and clocked playback. It also supports synthesized speech and sound effects, positional 3D audio, and common asset formats including WAV, Ogg Vorbis, FLAC and MP3.

Its strongest advantage is breadth within runtime audio. Developers can combine real-time filters, attenuation, Doppler support, gapless looping and disk-based streaming through WavStream. The published interfaces extend beyond C/C++ to Python, Ruby, C#, D and BlitzMax, with integrations for RPG Maker and GameMaker: Studio. Runtime targets include Windows, Linux, macOS, Android and web through Emscripten, giving the library a practical fit for projects that span desktop, mobile and browser builds.

SoLoud is distributed as source under the ZLib/LibPNG license and can be used in commercial applications. Deployment is self-hosted, so teams remain responsible for bringing the library into their projects and maintaining that integration. Support is centered on community resources and documentation rather than a paid service tier. Choose SoLoud when portable, programmable playback and mixing are the priority; consider another tool when the project depends on a broader editor ecosystem or dedicated production workflows beyond runtime audio.
