Our verdict on SOGo

SOGo is an open-source groupware server for organizations and communities that need shared email, calendars, contacts, and tasks. Its webmail interface works with existing IMAP and SMTP services, while shared calendars, address books, reminders, recurring events, and permission-based resource sharing support collaborative work. The platform suits teams that want control over deployment and data, particularly self-hosters managing their own mail, directory, and database services.

The main strength is ecosystem coverage. SOGo supports web access alongside Mozilla Thunderbird, Microsoft Outlook through a synchronization plugin, Apple Calendar, Apple Contacts, and ActiveSync-compatible mobile devices. CalDAV, CardDAV, GroupDAV, IMAP, and Microsoft ActiveSync extend synchronization across email, contacts, events, and tasks. LDAP and MariaDB, MySQL, PostgreSQL, and Oracle support can also fit existing directory and database environments. Two-factor authentication adds an account-security control, while filtering and auto-reply features cover routine mail administration.

SOGo itself is free and open source, while Alinto separately lists paid premium support packages that include access to official release repositories. That model keeps the core product available without a per-user product subscription, but it places deployment, administration, and ongoing operations with the organization. SOGo is a strong choice for teams that value open standards, shared groupware, and self-hosted control. Organizations seeking a fully managed service, or Outlook users who want native access without a synchronization plugin, should consider a different fit.
