SNOPT review
A focused sparse-SQP solver for smooth, large-scale optimization across major desktop platforms.

SNOPT (Sparse Nonlinear OPTimizer) is a self-hosted software package from UC San Diego and Stanford for solving large-scale linear and nonlinear optimization problems. It is aimed at optimization specialists working with smooth, including nonconvex, problems where function and gradient evaluations may be expensive. Libraries are available for Windows, macOS, and Linux, with Fortran at the core and C and C++ interfaces for application integration.
Pricing is handled through contact with sales, and there is no general free plan. Eligible noncommercial research users can request a restricted trial download, while commercial licensing is handled separately through licensing information. The integration surface is practical for technical teams: SNOPT offers a MATLAB interface with precompiled MEX files, supports AMPL, and exposes user-configurable solver options. These interfaces suit organizations that already organize models and workflows around MATLAB, AMPL, or compiled-language code.
Its main technical depth is the sparse sequential quadratic programming algorithm. SNOPT uses limited-memory quasi-Newton approximations to the Lagrangian Hessian and can handle infeasible problems through elastic bounds on nonlinear constraints. That combination targets large, smooth optimization models rather than general-purpose simulation. Teams needing cloud deployment, discrete-event behavior, system dynamics, agent-based modeling, finite-element analysis, or multiphysics capabilities should choose a broader simulation product. SNOPT fits best when the central requirement is solving structured smooth optimization problems and the organization can manage a self-hosted, commercially licensed solver.
SNOPT pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Handles large-scale linear and nonlinear optimization with sparse SQP
- Supports smooth, nonconvex problems and expensive function evaluations
- Provides Fortran, C/C++, MATLAB/MEX, and AMPL connectivity
- Where it doesn't
- Commercial licensing requires contacting sales
- Self-hosted deployment only, with no cloud deployment
- Focused on optimization rather than broad simulation methods
