Snes9x GX review
Free, open-source SNES emulation with broad controller, storage, display and save options.

Snes9x GX is a free, open-source emulator for Super Nintendo and Super Famicom games. Its documented targets are Nintendo Wii, Wii U and GameCube, making it a focused choice for owners of those consoles and related homebrew environments. The standalone emulator supports controller configuration, cheat files, game snapshots, SRAM saves and multiple ways to access game files. It also supports Satellaview games, giving the project scope beyond basic cartridge emulation while remaining centered on the SNES family.
Storage and display support are strong parts of the feature set. Snes9x GX can read from SD cards, USB devices, DVDs and SMB network shares, with ZIP and 7z archive support for compressed files. PAL/NTSC autodetection and 16:9 widescreen support address different display setups, while video filters include hq2x, Scale2x, Scanlines, 2xBR and DDT. Automatic and manual SRAM and snapshot saves provide separate ways to preserve progress. Turbo mode can run at up to twice normal speed, and cheat-code support adds another layer of control.
The main trade-off is platform focus: Snes9x GX is designed around Wii, Wii U and GameCube hardware rather than general desktop use. Buyers looking for a dedicated console-based SNES emulator with flexible storage, controller variety and visual options should find its scope well aligned with that use case. Those seeking a broader multi-platform application should consider a different emulator. The project is published under the dborth vendor name, with downloadable releases and continuous-integration builds documented through its GitHub repository; the latest opened release is 5.0.2, dated August 11, 2026.
