SmartFoxServer is a client/server SDK and game backend for multiplayer games, MMOs, virtual worlds, and other real-time applications. It combines networking, zones, rooms, matchmaking, invitations, player searches, buddy lists, server-side extensions, analytics, administration tools, and database connectivity. Its platform coverage includes web, Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, and Android, with self-hosted deployment or hosting through Overcast. It is aimed at teams building mature multiplayer deployments that need more than basic transport and lobby services.
Pricing covers both free and paid deployment paths. The Community Edition is free, full-featured, has no time limitation, and supports 100 concurrent users; commercial use is permitted with a Powered by SmartFoxServer notice. The Elastic license starts at €32.50 per month, with a 500-CCU starting configuration, prepaid rechargeable credit, daily charging, and an adjustable maximum CCU. Perpetual options include 100 users for €325 one-time and 500 users for €650 one-time, alongside 2000 Users, 5000 Users, and Unlimited Users editions. The published plans also present SmartFoxServer 3 as a beta release, with a 20% beta discount.
Its strongest fit is a team that wants control over networking, player sessions, game state, matchmaking, and backend extensions across a wide client ecosystem. Integrations include Unity, Godot, HTML5, iOS, Android, Java, JavaScript, Swift, .NET, C++, and Overcast, while extensions can be written in Java, Kotlin, Scala, and Groovy. ODBC and JDBC connectivity supports database integration, and analytics plus administration tools support live operations. Teams seeking a narrowly focused, managed backend may prefer a simpler service; SmartFoxServer is better suited to developers prepared to manage a broad server platform or use its cloud hosting option.
