SmartDO review
A broad CAD/CAE optimization platform for complex, programmable engineering studies.

SmartDO is a general-purpose engineering design-optimization platform from FEA-Opt Technology Co. Ltd., founded in 2005. It is aimed at engineering teams working on complex industrial design problems across structural, thermal, CFD, electromagnetic, acoustic, and other disciplines. The platform combines a one-page optimization setup GUI with constrained studies, direct global search, gradient-based and genetic-algorithm solvers, multi-objective optimization with APO, and concurrent sizing, shaping, and topology optimization.
Its ecosystem fit is a central strength. SmartDO connects with ANSYS Workbench, NX Simcenter3D, SOLIDWORKS, FreeCAD, PrePoMax, CalculiX, ANSA/Meta, Python, and Tcl/Tk. OpenXim integration supports CAD and simulation workflows, while Tcl/Tk and Python programmability give teams a way to extend or automate work. CAD/CAE failure detection through S.A.F.E.D. and SmartLearning are designed to address failed studies and computational cost within the optimization process. These capabilities make the product relevant where existing CAD and CAE tools need a coordinating optimization layer.
Pricing follows a contact-sales model rather than a published tier structure. The product’s breadth is notable: it covers multiple optimization approaches, multidisciplinary workflows, manufacturing constraints, simulation integration, native CAD integration, lattice optimization, and STL export for 3D printing. Teams that need flexible optimization across established engineering software should consider SmartDO. It is less suited to users looking for a focused, standalone CAD application or a simple design tool with a narrow workflow. The best fit is an engineering group prepared to work across CAD, CAE, scripting, and iterative optimization studies.
SmartDO pros and cons
