Our verdict on Slate

Slate is an open-source JavaScript framework for building customizable rich text editors in web applications. It is designed for developers creating document, publishing, and content-management experiences rather than teams seeking a hosted editor service. React is central to its editable component model, while support for Angular and Vue 3 extends its framework reach. Its nested recursive document model can represent structured content, and custom element and leaf rendering gives teams control over how content appears.

The architecture is Slate’s defining strength. A plugin-first approach, schema-less core, rich-text formatting, block structures, and HTML paste handling through serializers give implementers a flexible foundation. Undo and redo history is available through slate-history. Images and tables are represented through examples and document structures, while rich media rendering can be handled with custom components. This breadth suits products that need an editor shaped around their own content model, but it also means the implementation team must decide how to compose and maintain the surrounding capabilities.

Slate can support collaborative editing through Yjs integrations, with Liveblocks also listed among its integration options. Collaboration and table support are capabilities developers layer into their applications, not bundled hosted-plan features. That makes Slate a strong fit for React teams that want control over document structure, rendering, and integration choices. Teams should choose another option if they want a packaged hosted editor with capabilities assembled and operated for them; Slate is better suited to developer-led products where editor behavior and content modeling need to remain customizable.
