simple-emu-c64 is an open-source, terminal-based emulator for Commodore computers and MOS 6502/6510 processors. It is aimed at users who want to run Commodore BASIC, 6502 assembly, or machine-code programs while working with several classic Commodore models. The project covers the Commodore 64, Commodore 128, PET 2001, VIC-20, Commodore 16, and Plus/4. A Windows console binary is released, while the C# source can run in Mac and Linux terminals, giving the project coverage across all three major desktop platforms.
Its strongest differentiator is breadth across machine models and their memory systems. C64 support includes RAM, ROM, I/O, and character-set banking; C128 emulation includes an MMU with two 64K memory banks; Plus/4 memory banking is supported; and VIC-20 memory expansion is configurable. That makes simple-emu-c64 more suitable for comparing or running programs across Commodore families than a narrowly focused C64-only tool. Terminal and Windows console execution also fit text-based workflows and programming-oriented use.
The trade-off is a focused emulator experience rather than a broad desktop environment. The project documents substantial hardware and peripheral limitations, so users who need a fuller recreation of Commodore peripherals should evaluate those constraints closely. Source builds also require Commodore ROM files, and the project license excludes those ROMs; the latest release states that ROMs are included in its folder structure. Choose simple-emu-c64 for open-source, terminal-oriented emulation across multiple Commodore systems. Choose an alternative if graphical interaction or wider hardware and peripheral coverage is central to the project.
