Our verdict on Silk

Silk is an interactive generative-art application by Yuri Vishnevsky, available in a browser and as the Silk 2 app for iPhone and iPad. It is aimed at casual creative expression, mandalas, wallpapers, and other abstract artwork rather than conventional illustration. The central experience uses flowing strands that respond to brush movement, with symmetry options that mirror marks across the center or spiral them toward the center.

The web version is freely accessible, while Silk 2 – Generative Art is a separate one-time purchase for iPhone and iPad, with a starting price of 2.99. The app adds high-resolution export, an eraser, additional palettes, Apple Pencil and 3D Touch support, and layouts optimized for larger devices. Color blending, undo and redo, and picture saving round out a compact set of tools for quickly developing a composition. These features keep the emphasis on experimentation with symmetry, color, and motion instead of detailed manual illustration.

Silk fits solo creators and small creative projects that value a narrow, visually distinctive workflow across web and mobile. Its browser availability makes it easy to begin, while the iOS app extends the same concept with pressure-sensitive input and higher-resolution output. The trade-off is scope: there are no layers, and the toolset is centered on generative strands, palettes, erasing, and symmetry. Choose Silk for abstract pieces, mandalas, and wallpapers; choose a broader illustration app when layered editing, extensive drawing tools, or a more general production workflow is required.
