Our verdict on Samplr
Samplr is an iPad sampler for audio experimentation, composition and live performance. Its eight play modes cover Slicer, Looper, Granular, Tape, Scratch, Arpeggiator, Keyboard and Loop Player, giving musicians several ways to manipulate samples in a single mobile instrument. It is aimed at performers and solo musicians who want to shape and play audio on an iPad, including by touch, rather than a broad desktop sampler workflow.
Its strongest case is the range of performance controls. Audio input recording and resampling let users bring sound into the instrument, while the gesture recorder adds sequencing. Six sample slots can each play up to 16 voices, and each sample has distortion, filter, amplitude modulator, feedback delay and reverb. MIDI keyboard, controller and sync input broaden the ways to control it. For musicians who want playable sound manipulation and resampling in one iPad app, these features make it more than a basic sample trigger.
Samplr fits an iOS-centered setup: it supports Ableton Link, Inter-App Audio and Audiobus input and output, and imports WAV and AIFF files from iCloud Drive, Dropbox and AudioShare. It is a standalone app, not a plugin, and its listed pricing model is paid with no free plan. That combination makes it a reasonable fit for iPad musicians who value touch performance and mobile audio connections. Musicians needing a multi-platform tool or plugin-based workflow should look elsewhere.
