Our verdict on Sakugo

Sakugo is a web app for Japanese learners who want to produce sentences, rather than focus on speaking practice. It presents English prompts for translation into Japanese, then provides AI-generated ratings, comments, inline corrections, and model translations. The format gives learners feedback on their written output while they work through individual prompts. Vocabulary study is part of the same learning experience: spaced-repetition mastery tracking accompanies definitions, cultural notes, example sentences, and furigana. Genki- and JLPT-aligned paths and JLPT vocabulary lists offer structure for learners following either course material or exam-oriented study.

The writing-feedback loop is Sakugo's clearest fit. Learners can compare their typed Japanese with corrections and a model translation, while vocabulary pages add context beyond a bare definition. Its curriculum links sentence production to vocabulary review and established Genki- and JLPT-aligned paths, making it more suited to ongoing written study than a standalone translation utility. The app is currently in beta and free for beta testers, with a daily quota of about 20 sentence evaluations. That limit may suit a regular, bounded practice routine, but learners seeking frequent or high-volume correction may find it restrictive.

Sakugo is web-only and does not provide speaking practice, so learners looking for pronunciation work or a mobile app should choose a product that covers those needs. It is described as a one-person beta project, and the documentation says subscription plans with higher limits and additional features are in development. For now, its appeal is the combination of typed production, AI feedback, and vocabulary tracking at no cost to beta testers. It is a focused option for solo learners who want written Japanese practice; it is less suitable for learners who need speaking exercises or more than the daily evaluation allowance.
