SAFLII is a free, nonprofit online legal information repository from the Southern African Legal Information Institute. It is designed for lawyers, researchers, students and other users seeking South African and regional case law, legislation, government gazettes, court rules, journal articles, court rolls and related legal publications. Access is provided through the web, and login details are not required.

The published access model is straightforward: SAFLII offers its legal information free of charge rather than dividing the service into paid tiers. Its coverage is broad within its regional focus, including South Africa and databases covering Angola, Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Madagascar, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Seychelles, Eswatini, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. The searchable collection includes South African national legislation and consolidated Acts, government gazettes, law journals and other legal publications, alongside case-law databases. That breadth makes it a practical starting point for research that crosses several Southern and Eastern African jurisdictions.

Search is the core experience. Users can run full-text searches across SAFLII databases and narrow research by words, phrases, legislation names, case names and document titles. LawCite adds automatically generated citation and case-reference connections, while court rolls and Rule 16A notices extend the collection beyond reported judgments and statutes. SAFLII suits users who need free, jurisdiction-focused legal research in a browser. It is less suitable for teams looking for a broader workflow platform built around additional research-management functions, since the published feature set is centered on legal information search, citation analysis and court notices.
