RT-Thread review
A free, modular embedded OS with real-time scheduling, IoT protocols and FOTA.

RT-Thread is an open-source embedded operating system for microcontrollers and other IoT devices. It is intended for teams building embedded products that need a real-time kernel alongside configurable software components, rather than organizations seeking a hosted console to enroll and manage device fleets. Its feature set spans core operating-system functions and device-level capabilities, including multitasking, hardware-peripheral management, networking, file systems and power controls.
For connectivity, RT-Thread lists Ethernet, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, NB-IoT and cellular support, along with HTTP, MQTT and LwM2M protocols. It also includes remote firmware upgrade (FOTA), making device updates part of the embedded software toolkit. A virtual file system supports multiple file-system types, while power management includes sleep and dynamic voltage and frequency scaling. That breadth suits projects where networking, energy management and updates need to be integrated at the device level; it is not a substitute for a cloud fleet-management service.
RT-Thread is free for commercial use, according to its documentation, and its software is open source. The vendor describes a small-footprint Nano version for resource-constrained microcontrollers, as well as configurable components and packages for more capable devices. RT-Thread Studio adds graphical configuration and package-management features. These options may suit teams that want to tailor an embedded OS to different device constraints. Choose it if your work centers on embedded devices and you need real-time scheduling, IoT protocols or FOTA. Look elsewhere if your main requirement is centrally enrolling and managing fleets through a hosted service.
RT-Thread pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Hard real-time scheduling, multitasking and thread communication
- Supports MQTT, LwM2M and multiple wired and wireless protocols
- Combines device management, power controls and FOTA
- Where it doesn't
- Requires self-hosted deployment on embedded devices
- Not a hosted service for centrally managing device fleets
- Nano is aimed at resource-constrained MCUs, limiting its scope
