romtool is a command-line ROM editing API with a simple frontend for modifying data in supported games. It is aimed at people who want to inspect ROMs, work with mapped data, and turn changes into patches rather than edit graphics or sprites. Its game-independent design can serve multiple games, but practical data editing depends on a ROM map: the project says only a few games have maps included, and users can create their own for other ROMs.

The workflow is centered on structured data and patches. romtool can identify ROMs and report type, size, CRC32, SHA-1, and MD5; extract mapped tables to TSV; and build patches from edited tables or YAML/JSON changesets. It can also create IPS patches, convert IPS patches to and from readable text, merge patches, compare original and modified ROM files, and examine or manipulate headers. That breadth suits patch-focused work, while the listed category scope excludes tile and sprite editing and a hex editor. Choose a different tool if those are central to your process.

romtool is open source and has a free plan, with self-hosted deployment. The documented platforms are Windows and Linux; the README also says other platforms may be installable using pip or pipx, without confirming support for them. The project labels itself late alpha and warns it may not be up to date, while its release page shows v0.6.0 as a pre-release. That status and the need to supply maps for unsupported games make it a better fit for technically comfortable solo users or small teams prepared to work with a command-line tool than for people seeking a polished, broad-coverage editor.

romtool pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Identifies ROMs and reports metadata including CRC32, SHA-1, and MD5
    • Exports mapped ROM tables to TSV and builds patches from changesets
    • Creates, reads, merges, and compares IPS patches
  • Where it doesn't
    • The project describes itself as late alpha and warns it may be out of date
    • Only a few games have included maps; other ROMs may require custom maps
    • No tile or sprite editing or hex editor
