ROMSorter is an open-source Windows desktop utility for organizing and maintaining ROM collections. It is aimed at collectors who need more than basic file browsing, particularly those sorting large sets, validating files, removing duplicates, converting disc images, or preparing collections for Everdrive devices. The application archives files into ZIP format, extracts supported archives, creates catalogs with names and hashes, and verifies files against those catalogs. It also renames single-file games with DAT files and can arrange collections into 1G1R sets using Parent/Clone DAT files.

The main strength is the breadth of collection-management and conversion tasks in one utility. ROMSorter can detect identical files and move duplicates into a subfolder, generate letter-based folders for Everdrive devices, create and extract CHD files from disc-image formats, and generate M3U playlists from disc formats. Batch application of IPS and BPS patches adds another practical workflow for users maintaining groups of files. These features make it more suitable for structured ROM curation than for a narrow archive-only tool. The repository also includes Librarian, a command-line companion available across platforms, while the current ROMSorter release is Windows x64.

ROMSorter is free and open source, with no paid tiers described. That makes its value proposition straightforward for users who want a focused desktop utility without a subscription. The trade-off is platform scope: users seeking a native ROMSorter desktop application outside Windows should look elsewhere. It also does not provide metadata scraping, so it is better suited to file organization, DAT-based naming, hash verification, and format handling than to enriching collections with external game information. Choose ROMSorter for Windows-based sorting, validation, conversion, and patching; choose an alternative if cross-platform desktop support or metadata management is central to the workflow.

  • Where it doesn't
    • The current ROMSorter release is limited to Windows x64.
    • Metadata scraping is not included.
    • Its strongest workflows require DAT files or existing catalogs.
