ROMSearch is a free, open-source Windows desktop tool for preparing ROM collections for emulator use. It retrieves files from remote or local locations, parses DAT files and ROM filenames, and lets users select preferred versions through defined preferences. The tool then organizes chosen files into structured folders and displays them by game in its ROMBrowser GUI. It is aimed at solo users who need to source, group, and browse ROM files rather than manage a broader library service.

ROMSearch has no paid tiers: its pricing model is free, and installation is available through pip and GitHub. Remote-folder synchronization uses rclone, while RetroAchievements support enables ROM-hash matching; Discord is also listed among its integrations. DAT handling goes beyond basic parsing by mapping filenames between different DAT files. The workflow can remove duplicates with retool clonelists, group multi-disc games into .m3u playlists, and compress files into a supported single-file format, giving collection preparation several practical steps in one desktop tool.

Its main trade-off is scope. ROMSearch is in early development and focuses on finding, selecting, matching, and arranging files. It supports advanced archive handling and hash verification, but not metadata scraping or file renaming. Windows is the only supported platform, and support is community- and documentation-based. Choose ROMSearch if your priority is organizing sourced ROMs and browsing them by game; choose another tool if you need metadata enrichment, filename automation, or a non-Windows deployment.

  • Where it doesn't
    • Windows-only desktop deployment.
    • The project is in early development.
    • No metadata scraping or file-renaming features.
