romlm review
A free, open-source ROM manager for tag-based sorting and filename-based cleanup.

romlm is an open-source Python command-line tool for organizing retro-game ROM collections. It is aimed at individual collectors and people preparing libraries for emulation systems or handheld devices. The tool runs on Windows, macOS and Linux, and is distributed as a Python package, through Homebrew, as source code and through platform-specific binaries. Its focus is file organization rather than metadata enrichment: it does not scrape metadata, and it does not provide AI features.
Its strongest area is collection cleanup through archives and tags. romlm extracts ZIP and 7z files, including nested folder structures, and can pack uncompressed files into ZIP or 7z archives. It sorts ROMs into alphabetic A–Z folders, maps filename tags to user-defined folders and lets users exclude selected tags from that sorting. Separate folders for homebrew and pirate ROMs add another practical organizational rule. Verbose logging and removal of common system metadata files also support repeatable cleanup workflows.
The main limitation is how duplicate handling works. romlm removes duplicates using filename-derived region, revision, version and release information, rather than checksum databases, so its approach is based on naming and release attributes. It also leaves file renaming outside its scope. Choose romlm if you want a free, open-source utility centered on archive management, tag-based folders and filename-based duplicate removal across desktop operating systems. Choose an alternative if hash verification, metadata scraping, file renaming or a graphical interface is essential to your workflow.
