RePlayOS review
A free, display-focused emulation frontend for Raspberry Pi systems.
Reviewed by iTechGuides Editors · Editorial team · Updated Oct 2026
RePlayOS is a Linux distribution built around a custom libretro frontend for classic console, arcade, and computer emulation. It is designed for Raspberry Pi Zero 2, 3, 4, and 5 boards running RePlayOS Linux, with controller-based navigation and bundled, preconfigured emulation cores. The system suits living-room builds, dedicated arcade cabinets, and display-focused projects that need a focused interface rather than a general-purpose desktop environment.
Its strongest area is display and library flexibility. RePlayOS supports LCD and CRT screens, including dual-screen configurations, while its DynaRes engine provides native timing for CRT displays. Game libraries can be stored on SD cards, USB devices, NVMe storage, or NFS shares. More than 700 controller configurations, favorites, recently played lists, and low-latency video, audio, and input engines support a range of hardware arrangements. RetroAchievements integration adds achievement support for compatible cores and games.
RePlayOS also fits installations that need a controlled appliance-style experience. Kiosk mode and game autostart can launch a system directly into its intended use, while the local HTTP JSON REST API enables LAN control and status access. The public download is free, but the bundled frontend is proprietary and separately licensed. RePlayOS is explicitly limited to Raspberry Pi hardware and does not support PC or Orange Pi devices. It is a strong choice for Raspberry Pi owners prioritizing CRT or LCD presentation, storage options, controller navigation, and a dedicated interface. Users seeking broader hardware support, metadata scraping, or cloud sync should choose an alternative.
