RDMO helps research teams plan, implement, and administer data management across a project lifecycle. Researchers and institutions can collaboratively create data management plans, keep project information current, and generate outputs through configurable views. Its fit is strongest for groups that want to tailor DMP workflows to their community and can operate or configure an instance; it is not a repository for storing research data.

Its core strength is flexibility in how plans are collected and maintained. Configurable questionnaires and catalogues let institutions shape the information they request, while project snapshots preserve versions as information changes. Teams can assign project roles with different permissions, and views can be exported as PDF or office-compatible documents. An API provides access to project and questionnaire information. These capabilities suit lifecycle documentation and collaboration more than a narrow, one-time form-filling process. RDMO can link projects to repositories and identifier systems, but that linking does not turn it into a storage service or an identifier issuer.

RDMO is open source and described as free, with a community-supported development model. Institutions can run their own instances, and deployment options include self-hosted and cloud. Email, community, and documentation are listed support channels. Buyers should account for the work of configuration or hosting rather than expect a ready-made repository experience. Choose RDMO when adaptable DMP workflows, snapshots, permissions, and API access matter; consider another tool if the primary need is a managed repository that stores and serves research data directly.

RDMO pros and cons

  • Where it wins
    • Collaborative plans can be updated and snapshotted across a project lifecycle
    • Configurable questionnaires, catalogues, and views shape plans and outputs
    • Role permissions, API access, and repository-linking support team workflows
  • Where it doesn't
    • Requires configuration or hosting rather than providing a turnkey repository
    • Does not store research data or issue persistent identifiers
    • Repository selection and identifier links need external services
