QuArK, or Quake Army Knife, is a free, open-source Windows desktop editor for creating maps and other game assets for Quake-family and similar game engines. It is aimed at developers and modders working across 3D worlds, entities, terrain, textures, reusable templates, models, archives, and project files. Its map editor builds 3D worlds from geometric solids while also supporting entity placement, terrain generation, texture application, and duplicators.

Its main strength is breadth within a legacy 3D game-editing workflow. QuArK combines world construction with asset and project management instead of limiting itself to map geometry. The published feature set includes model editing, texture browsing and application, archive editing, project exploration, and Python-based plug-in extensibility. That combination suits projects that need one editor for maps and related game assets, particularly when terrain, prefabs, entities, and engine files belong in the same workflow.

The trade-off is fit rather than price: QuArK is Windows-only and its stated scope centers on Quake-family and similar engines. Teams working in that ecosystem should find the feature coverage aligned with legacy 3D map production, while projects targeting other engine families may need a different editor. The homepage also currently presents a cloud-access gatekeeper, although the project remains available through its official SourceForge project and file pages. Choose QuArK for a broad, free, open-source toolset around supported legacy engines; look elsewhere if cross-platform access or a different engine focus is essential.
