PumpLinx review
Specialized transient 3D CFD for rotating and sliding fluid machinery.

PumpLinx is Simerics, Inc.'s 3D computational fluid dynamics software for analyzing pumps, motors, compressors, turbines, valves and fluid systems with rotating or sliding components. Its scope suits mid-market and enterprise engineering teams working on fluid machinery, especially where transient flow behavior, cavitation or heat transfer matters. It covers flow and turbulence as well as aeration, particles and conjugate heat transfer, making it more focused on fluid-system analysis than general-purpose simulation needs.
The specialized modeling features are a central strength. For liquid systems, its cavitation module accounts for vapor, free gas and liquid compressibility. Particle tracking and fluid-structure interaction extend the analysis beyond basic flow simulation. Mesh preparation is supported by automated CAB mesh generation and automated structured-grid generation for positive-displacement pump rotors; component templates cover pumps, motors, compressors and dynamic valves. The published specifications identify a transient 3D CFD solver with distributed-memory parallel processing and CAB Cartesian-hexahedra meshing. CAD inputs include STEP, Parasolid, IGES, SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA and NX.
Commercially, the pricing model is contact sales rather than a published tier structure, so buyers should discuss licensing directly with Simerics. Email and phone are listed support channels. One important product-direction consideration is that Simerics describes PumpLinx as legacy code and identifies Simerics-MP+ as its successor, while also describing Simerics-MP+ as formerly PumpLinx. Teams evaluating a new deployment should clarify which product and licensing terms apply to their intended workflow. PumpLinx is a fit for groups centered on pump and rotating-fluid equipment; teams seeking broad CAE coverage or an actively positioned successor product may prefer to evaluate other options.
PumpLinx pros and cons
- Where it wins
- Models cavitation with vapor, free gas and liquid compressibility
- Automates CAB meshing and structured grids for positive-displacement rotors
- Supports particle tracking and fluid-structure interaction
- Where it doesn't
- Focused on pumps and related fluid machinery rather than broad CAE work
- Pricing is handled through contact with sales
- Simerics identifies PumpLinx as legacy code, with Simerics-MP+ as its successor
