Our verdict on Psybeam
Psybeam is an iPhone app for face-to-face, two-way speech translation, aimed at travelers speaking with someone who does not share their language. Each person takes a turn holding one of two on-screen buttons to speak; the app plays the translation aloud, and the other person does not need the app. Support spans 22 languages in both directions, and Psybeam can suggest a local language based on location. Its simple exchange model suits short conversations better than users looking for broad language-learning or communication features.
The interaction is deliberately turn-based: choose the languages, then hand over the speaking turn with the corresponding button. Translated text is oriented toward the person being addressed, and an on-device transcript preserves the conversation. That combination keeps the app focused on face-to-face exchanges, rather than a continuous translation mode. Live voice translation requires a connection, so Psybeam is not suited to travel situations where offline speech translation is essential.
According to the vendor's pricing page, Psybeam starts with free minutes, then uses one-time minute packs starting at $4.99. The published pack names are Small Pack, Medium Pack, and Large Pack; this purchase structure may suit occasional travelers who prefer one-time purchases to an ongoing plan. It is available on iOS, which makes it a poor fit for Android users or buyers who need a broader platform choice. Choose Psybeam for simple, spoken two-way exchanges on an iPhone; consider another option if offline use or a less turn-oriented conversation experience matters more.
