PrivateStorage review
A privacy-focused storage service with unusual storage-time pricing and limited sharing.

PrivateStorage is an open-source cloud storage and folder-synchronization service for individuals who prioritize privacy. Its desktop application encrypts folders locally before uploading them, while encrypted data is distributed across storage servers. Instead of conventional usernames and passwords, access uses capabilities, and a Recovery Key can restore access if the original device is lost. The service supports Windows, macOS, Linux and Android, with read-only device synchronization as an available option.
The published Storage-time plan costs USD 6.50 for 30 GB-months. It includes anonymous storage-time payment, client-side encryption and payment based on storage used over time. This model ties the charge to both capacity and duration rather than presenting conventional subscription tiers. There is no free plan, so PrivateStorage is aimed at users who are comfortable paying for storage from the start and who specifically value its storage-time approach.
PrivateStorage’s strongest fit is privacy-conscious file storage and synchronization across supported devices. Its client-side encryption, distributed and redundant encrypted storage, Recovery Key-based recovery and open-source software create a focused privacy feature set. The trade-off is a narrower collaboration scope: the official FAQ states that file sharing is not currently available, even though device synchronization is supported. Users who need account-based collaboration or file sharing should choose another service; users seeking encrypted personal storage with capability authorization and storage-time payment may find PrivateStorage a closer match.
