Our verdict on Pregap
Pregap is a macOS desktop application for solo users and small teams creating Red Book audio CDs from files, folders, or playlists. It imports FLAC, ALAC, WAV, AIFF, MP3, and AAC, converting those files to CD audio during the burn. Its focus is physical audio-disc production rather than general media authoring, with support for CD-Text and gap-controlled disc-at-once recording.
The standout capability is precise gap handling. Pregap can record disc-at-once with configurable gaps down to zero, which suits continuous recordings and albums where transitions should remain uninterrupted. It writes CD-Text from file tags, while preflight checks inspect the drive, disc capacity, running time, and CD-Text before recording. The app also blocks a burn when a file cannot be decoded, helping catch source problems before media is written. CD-RW discs can be erased and reused.
Setup is straightforward but hardware-dependent: the application requires macOS 14 or later and a compatible optical drive. Its narrow platform and single-purpose scope are important trade-offs for anyone working across operating systems or seeking broader disc and media tools. Pregap fits Mac users who need Red Book compliance, exact gap control, and tagged track text in a desktop workflow. Users who need Windows support, a wider deployment footprint, or capabilities beyond audio CD burning should choose a broader alternative.
