Our verdict on Prau

Prau brings speech and text translation to iPhone, with tools for face-to-face conversations, live audio, typed text, photos, and PDFs. It is aimed at solo users who want translation to work offline, including spoken output and live subtitles. Language packs run on-device; voice input also depends on an iOS offline dictation model being installed for the language. The app requires iOS 18 or later and does not require an account.

Its feature set extends beyond a basic conversation translator. A split-screen mode presents face-to-face exchanges, while Stream mode provides offline live subtitles and audio translation. Translations can play through headphones, including AirPods and other headphones. Camera and PDF recognition handle text in images and documents. Users can save and search conversation histories, then export or share them as TXT or PDF. On supported Apple Intelligence devices, Prau can also create on-device conversation summaries; Siri and Action Button support provide launch options within the Apple ecosystem.

Prau has a free plan, and conversation history search and export are available for free. Pro features cost $9.99 per month, $49.99 per year, or $99.99 as a one-time purchase, according to the published plans. A three-day free trial is offered.
