Our verdict on PowerWorld Simulator

PowerWorld Simulator is a Windows desktop application for modeling, visualizing, and analyzing high-voltage electric power systems. It is aimed at transmission planners, system operators, power-market analysts, educators, and related engineering users. The base package supports power-flow analysis for systems of up to 250,000 buses, interactive animated one-line diagrams, graphical case editing, contingency analysis, short-circuit analysis, economic dispatch, and PTDF computation. That scope makes it a specialized fit for large transmission studies rather than a general electrical design package.

Pricing is structured around one-time licenses. The First Simulator License costs $11,000 and includes the base Simulator package plus one year of upgrades and support. An Additional Simulator License costs $5,500 for another base-package license. A Site License costs $33,000 and permits unlimited installations or concurrent instances at one geographic location. A Corporate License costs $66,000 for unlimited installations or concurrent instances throughout an organization. A limited 13-bus evaluation version is available as a free download, while optional add-ons have separate one-time prices. Commercial maintenance may be renewed after the included first year.

Its strongest advantage is analytical breadth within power-system simulation: contingency analysis can use batch processing and remedial action schemes, while time-step simulation can integrate weather data. Separate add-ons extend the system with transient-stability dynamic simulation, optimal power flow, voltage stability, available transfer capability, geomagnetically induced current analysis, distributed computing, and SimAuto automation. The trade-off is focus and deployment: it runs on Windows, has no AI features, and does not provide schematic capture, panel design, or MCAD integration. Choose it for large-scale transmission modeling and advanced grid analysis; choose another tool for broader electrical design workflows or multi-platform deployment.
