Our verdict on postmarketOS
postmarketOS is a free, open-source Linux distribution based on Alpine Linux, intended to extend the useful life of consumer electronics. It is suited to Linux enthusiasts who want to install a mobile or desktop Linux environment on compatible phones, tablets, laptops, Chromebooks, or single-board computers. Device-specific images and support across aarch64, armv7, x86_64, and riscv64 architectures make hardware choice part of the project’s appeal, but the project is not positioned for people seeking Android- or iOS-level polish.
Release options include stable and rolling edge channels, and users can choose among interfaces such as GNOME, Phosh, Plasma Mobile, and Sxmo. The Alpine package base provides apk packages; for Duranium, the immutable variant in development, Flatpak is the primary application distribution. Duranium uses image-based updates and standard GPT partitions on compatible laptops. These options give technically inclined users room to explore different device and software setups, while requiring attention to which image and release channel fit a particular device.
The central trade-off is device support: community devices, testing ports, and archived devices have different maintenance expectations, and testing ports may offer limited functionality. Stable kernel packages are kept up to date while a release is supported, but there is no fixed support duration stated; device support also depends on maintainers. Community-category devices require automatic kernel upgrades. Choose postmarketOS if you are comfortable checking device-specific support and maintaining a Linux installation; look elsewhere if you need consistent, polished phone support or predictable maintenance across devices.
