  • Where it wins

    • Meshes point clouds and repairs holes, boundaries, and surface quality.
    • Creates curves, NURBS patches, and parametric sketches from scanned geometry.
    • Transfers sketches to CATIA, NX, Creo, SolidWorks, and Inventor via add-ins.
  • Where it doesn't

    • Windows-only desktop software limits platform choice.
    • Pricing is sales-led rather than published as self-serve plans.
    • No documented sculpting, animation, or rendering capabilities.

Our verdict on PolyWorks|Modeler

PolyWorks|Modeler is desktop reverse-engineering software for turning digitized parts into polygonal models and CAD-oriented entities. It is aimed at manufacturing and engineering teams whose workflows run from scanning through CAD design, machining, or simulation. Metrology teams converting scans into CAD-ready surfaces are its clearest fit: the product covers mesh creation and repair, surface reconstruction, and sketch fitting rather than general-purpose 3D creation.

Its strongest area is the scan-to-CAD sequence. Teams can create polygonal meshes from point clouds, including real-time quality meshing, then fill holes, smooth surfaces, clean boundaries, and make meshes watertight. Editing tools include extrusion, surface offsets, fillet reconstruction, and Boolean operations. The software can create curves on polygonal surfaces and generate NURBS surface patches, and it can fit parametric sketch entities, dimensions, and constraints to scanned geometry. Those capabilities give engineering users several routes from scan data to geometry they can refine in professional CAD/CAM applications.

Ecosystem fit is practical for organizations already using major CAD modelers: add-ins transfer parametric sketches to CATIA, NX, Creo, SolidWorks, and Inventor. Polygonal formats include OBJ, PLY, STL, and VRML. The product is Windows-only and desktop-based, and the vendor directs prospective buyers to sales for pricing rather than publishing plans. That buying model and its focus on scan-derived geometry make it more suitable for mid-market and enterprise engineering teams than for individuals seeking an inexpensive general 3D package. Choose another tool if sculpting, animation, or rendering is central to the workflow.
