Polar combines billing software with Merchant of Record services for developers, designers, startups, and software businesses. It supports usage-based billing, recurring subscriptions, invoicing, hosted and embedded checkout, customer portals, payouts, and automated digital-product entitlements. Its open-source model and self-hosted option make it especially relevant to open-source SaaS startups that want control over their billing stack while offering subscriptions, usage-based products, or seat-based plans.

Pricing is organized across five monthly plans, plus a startup offer. The free Starter plan includes all features to sell and standard support. Pro costs $20 per month and adds preview access to new features and prioritized support. Growth costs $100 per month with the same listed support additions, while Scale costs $400 per month and adds a shared Slack channel, P1 support, and Single Sign-On. The Startup Program provides the Scale plan free for twelve months on annual billing for early-stage AI startups. Organizations created before May 27, 2026 may have the Early Member plan.

Polar’s strongest product depth is its developer-oriented billing and delivery layer. Usage metering covers tokens, API calls, compute, storage, and other events, while subscriptions support upgrades, proration, and renewals. Hosted checkout includes localized currencies and tax inclusion, and embedded checkout supports websites and JavaScript applications. As Merchant of Record, Polar handles international sales-tax liabilities and remittance for digital goods and services. APIs, SDKs, webhooks, and framework adapters support product integrations, with Stripe, GitHub, Discord, and Slack listed among its integrations. Choose Polar for flexible software monetization and open-source deployment; consider alternatives if longer market history or broader geographic reach is the priority.
