Our verdict on PNG-Upscale
PNG-Upscale is a desktop Java application for enlarging PNG images with pretrained super-resolution models. It is aimed at users who want a free, open-source desktop tool across Windows, macOS, and Linux, without relying on a browser-based workflow. The application supports image loading, output-folder and filename selection, dark and light themes, and model-specific processing. It is released under the MIT license and focuses specifically on PNG input.
Its main strength is model and scale choice. Users can select EDSR, ESPCN, FSRCNN, or LapSRN super-resolution models, with trained variants for 2x, 3x, and 4x enlargement. LapSRN also supports 8x upscaling, giving the product a wider scale range than a basic two-times enlarger. The repository recommends PNG images for best results, while the output-folder and filename controls keep the workflow focused on producing organized image files. This makes PNG-Upscale a good fit for desktop users who want to compare several pretrained approaches or need larger output at multiple scale levels.
The tradeoff is a narrow workflow. PNG-only input excludes projects centered on broader image-format support, and the described feature set does not establish a verified batch-processing workflow. The project distributes executable or JAR downloads for all three supported operating systems, but its release history is limited to one published v1.0 release. Choose PNG-Upscale if cross-platform access, open-source licensing, and selectable super-resolution models matter most. Choose an alternative if you need broader input-format coverage or a clearly defined batch pipeline.
