PlexMix is an open-source, self-hosted playlist generator for Plex music libraries. It synchronizes Plex metadata into SQLite, creates semantic embeddings and AI-generated tags, and turns natural-language descriptions into playlists. Prompts can cover mood, energy, tempo, emotion, environment, instruments, genre, year, rating, artist, key and danceability. That makes PlexMix a strong fit for technical Plex users who want more control than basic playlist editing provides.

Its main strength is the depth of its generation and filtering workflow. FAISS vector search supports semantic discovery, while filters can combine metadata such as genre, artist, year and rating with audio characteristics. Ordering modes include similarity, random, alternating artist and energy curve. PlexMix can also generate tags, environments and instruments, then export playlists as JSON or M3U or import playlist files. Its ecosystem centers on Plex, with AI connections for Google Gemini, OpenAI, Anthropic Claude and Cohere, plus local options including Ollama, LM Studio and llama.cpp. MusicBrainz is also supported.

Deployment is aimed at users comfortable with self-hosted software: PlexMix offers a command-line interface, Docker Compose deployment and an alpha web interface for library management and generation. Optional audio analysis and incremental library synchronization add control over how the collection is prepared. The trade-off is that PlexMix is not a plug-and-play streaming service; it requires Plex, and hosted AI providers may add separate costs unless local AI options are used. Choose it for advanced filtering, semantic search and playlist file control. Users seeking a polished interface or minimal setup should look elsewhere.
