Our verdict on Pinchflat

Pinchflat is an open-source, self-hosted application for downloading and organizing YouTube content. It suits archivists who follow channels or playlists and want new videos checked periodically, then saved to disk according to configurable rules. The web interface supports Docker and Podman deployment, while audio downloads, batch downloads, and playlist support extend its use beyond one-off video saving. Its focus is archival and media-library organization rather than in-app playback.

Its strongest area is workflow automation for a home media server. Users can define file naming and storage rules, filter content by title or cutoff date, and use YouTube cookies for private playlists. RSS feeds support podcast applications, while Plex, Jellyfin, and Kodi workflows connect downloads with common media-center setups. Apprise notifications can report activity, and SponsorBlock integration can help manage supported video segments. Custom yt-dlp options and lifecycle scripts provide additional control for users who need to shape download behavior around an existing setup.

Pinchflat is most suitable when YouTube is the main source and the destination is a personal media library. Its narrow source coverage makes it less suitable for people who need downloads from multiple video platforms, and verified subtitle support is not part of its listed capabilities. The self-hosted model also places deployment and maintenance within the user’s environment rather than providing a hosted service. Choose Pinchflat for scheduled YouTube channel and playlist archiving with Plex, Jellyfin, Kodi, or RSS workflows; choose another downloader when broader source coverage or in-app playback matters more.
