Our verdict on Pico Coding

Pico Coding teaches programming through guided game-building activities in a browser, for school classrooms and home learners. Lessons address computational thinking and problem solving, while Pico Design gives students project-based activities for conceptualizing and creating games. The teaching approach is text-based, and JavaScript is the supported language. Teachers can set up classrooms, manage students, and track progress through a dashboard and student progress reporting.

The two school plans differ in access and classroom features. Basic for School costs $0 per student per year and includes limited platform access, the first 5 levels of coding activities, and Winterland in Pico Design. Premium for School costs $5 per student per year, billed annually, and adds full access to the Pico platform, 500+ coding and design activities, a teacher dashboard and student progress report, and alignment to the digital technologies curriculum. That keeps the published school entry price low, while the limited Basic access makes it a starting point rather than the full curriculum offering.

The standout fit is project-based learning: students build games in a real programming environment and can receive real-time AI code feedback through PicoBot. Teachers have tools for classroom setup, student management, and progress tracking, tying activities to classroom oversight. The stated language coverage is JavaScript, so schools seeking instruction across multiple programming languages should look elsewhere. Pico Coding is a fit for schools wanting guided JavaScript game projects and classroom reporting at a low annual cost; it is less suitable where broad language choice is central.
