Our verdict on Pianoteq
Pianoteq is a physically modeled virtual instrument suite for musicians, composers, producers, educators, and sound designers who want piano and other keyboard sounds generated in real time rather than from sample libraries. Its instrument range also includes guitar, harp, and pitched percussion. It runs as a standalone application or as a plug-in, with versions for Windows, macOS, Linux, and iOS. The focus is on modeled instruments and sound-shaping controls rather than a sample-library workflow.
The editions differ in pack count and editing depth. Pianoteq 9 Stage includes two instrument packs and provides EQ, velocity curves, effects, and reverb. Standard adds a third pack, piano-model tweaking, advanced tuning, microphone positioning, morphing, and layering. PRO includes four packs and adds per-note editing of physical parameters, editable overtones, and audio up to 192 kHz. The Studio Bundle combines Pianoteq PRO with all current instrument packs. The vendor documents a time-limited evaluation version, but Pianoteq has no free plan. Buyers should compare the editions by the controls and instrument packs they need, especially if per-note editing matters.
Its plug-in options are VST3, AudioUnit, AAX, and LV2, alongside standalone operation. Continuous velocity response and customizable curves support expressive playing, while tuning, voicing, microphone placement, and mixing controls allow detailed adjustment of the modeled sound. These features make Pianoteq a fit for players and production workflows centered on shaping keyboard instruments. It is less suited to buyers seeking a free instrument or whose priority is a built-in sample-library approach; those needs point away from the product's modeling focus.
