PHPBoy review
A developer-focused emulator with CLI, WebAssembly, and experimental SDL2 frontends.

PHPBoy is an open-source Game Boy and Game Boy Color emulator written in PHP 8.4. It is aimed at developers, emulator enthusiasts, and technical users who prefer a command-line or browser-based experience over a packaged commercial application. Original Game Boy DMG games are supported through backward compatibility, while Game Boy Color emulation adds 15-bit RGB color support. The project provides keyboard controls through its CLI terminal frontend and can also run through a browser WebAssembly frontend.
Its main strength is the range of technical entry points for a focused emulator project. Users can load cartridges through support for MBC1, MBC3, and MBC5, play audio through SoX from the CLI, and use the published Blargg CPU instruction test coverage as a development-oriented signal. The browser WebAssembly frontend extends access beyond the terminal, while the experimental SDL2 native desktop frontend offers another route for users who want a desktop window. This combination makes PHPBoy more interesting for developers exploring emulation across interfaces than for users seeking a finished consumer application.
The trade-off is frontend maturity and setup effort. The browser frontend is incomplete, and the SDL2 desktop frontend is still work in progress, so the CLI is the clearest fit for users comfortable with a technical workflow. PHPBoy should appeal to people who value open-source code, PHP implementation details, and multiple frontend experiments. Users looking for a polished desktop emulator, established controller support, or a broader feature set should choose an alternative instead.
